Confidence: Empowering learners at Brighton College Vietnam

Confidence: Empowering learners at Brighton College Vietnam

Confidence helps a young person gain credibility, make a strong first impression, deal with pressure and respond productively to personal and professional challenges. Put simply, it is about being able to say, “I am willing to” rather “I am not ready”. Building confidence is an ongoing process that requires nurturing, guidance, and support. At Brighton College Vietnam, we recognize that “True confidence is not about being extroverted, outspoken, or always being the centre of attention. It’s about being comfortable in your own skin and embracing who you are”.

Nurturing and Supporting Individuals

At Brighton College Vietnam, our educational philosophy centres around nurturing and supporting each young person. Every pupil is assigned a personal tutor or class teacher who guides and supports them, aiming to discover their unique talents and help them become the best version of themselves. At BCVN, we have no template for pupils. We celebrate diversity, recognizing that each pupil possesses their own strengths and encourage them to have confidence in their abilities to excel in any field they are dedicated to. When teachers genuinely believe in their pupils, it empowers the pupils to go the extra mile, building self-belief and eliminating self-doubt. Additionally, our comprehensive pastoral care system supports pupils’ emotional needs, and mindfulness practices, helps them develop self-awareness, resilience, and a positive mindset, which are the fundamentals of confidence.

Positive Reinforcement for Motivation

Positive reinforcement is one of the core approaches at BCVN. Recognizing and celebrating both significant and small achievements play a vital role in building confidence. We actively acknowledge the progress and accomplishments of our pupils, whether it is through academic successes, participation in extracurricular activities, or personal growth.

Being Confident Through Learning

  • Presentation and Public Speaking: We understand the importance of effective communication and presentation skills in fostering confidence. Therefore, we integrate public speaking and presentation opportunities into our curriculum, allowing learners to develop their communication skills. By regularly practicing public speaking, pupils gain confidence in expressing their ideas and opinions in front of an audience.
  • Performing Arts & Sports: Engaging in performing arts and sports activities at BCVN helps learners develop self-confidence through self-expression, teamwork, and physical challenges. Rehearsals, performances, and competitions cultivate resilience, discipline, and a sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, active participation in these activities and leadership roles in clubs and sport teams allow pupils to recognize their contributions and develop confidence and responsibility.

A Supportive Community Builds Confidence

Confidence is greatly developed through being a part of a supportive community. When individuals are surrounded by a network of people who believe in their abilities and provide encouragement, it fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance. A supportive community creates an environment where individuals can freely express themselves, share their ideas, and take risks without fear of judgment or failure. This collective support not only boosts self-esteem but also empowers individuals to overcome challenges and pursue their goals with determination. Beyond this, the House System, one of our Pastoral Care programmes, also provides support to all pupils. Older pupils act as mentors, guiding and inspiring their younger peers. By living in a supportive community, individuals gain the confidence to explore their potential, and embrace new opportunities.

Reflective Learners Become Confident People

Reflection activities are often conducted after each lesson, trip, or activity at BCVN. Through journaling and self-reflection exercises, learners develop self-awareness and build confidence in expressing themselves authentically. Reflective learners possess a remarkable ability to transform their experiences into valuable lessons, making them confident and capable pupils. These individuals approach their studies with a thoughtful mindset, consistently taking the time to analyse and evaluate their progress. By actively reflecting on their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement, they foster a sense of confidence.

Unlimited opportunities to explore oneself

We offer various opportunities for pupils to show their potential. Whether it be through volunteering, active involvement in the School Council, or participation in our diverse range of co-curricular activities, every pupil is presented with numerous avenues to par Each accomplishment in various domains serves to empower learners, instilling in them a sense of capability and belief in their own abilities.
