Brightonians have the chance to study Mandarin (from Year 3), French (from Year 6), German, and Spanish (from Year 7). Let’s meet our new Head of Mandarin, Ms. Yap Ser Ven, and discover the benefits of learning world languages:

  • Cultural Insight, History, and Tradition: Learning new languages aims to deepen our pupils’ understanding of their culture, history, and traditions. The curriculum incorporates practical language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while immersing pupils in authentic cultural experiences. This approach ensures that pupils not only learn the language but also appreciate the rich cultural heritage it represents.
  • Enhanced Worldview and Global Competence: By learning the language, our pupils gain valuable insights into its society, enhancing their understanding of the world, enriching their worldview, and promoting global competence. This equips pupils to study and work in other countries, developing well-rounded, culturally aware global citizens.
  • Cognitive Benefits: Learning a new language improves memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Career Opportunities: Proficiency in other languages can open numerous career paths in international business, diplomacy, tourism, and more.

Brighton College has a high reputation for academic excellence and commitment to holistic education. I am attracted to the opportunity to be part of a community that values holistic education and offers various extracurricular activities, sports, arts, and community service opportunities. As an IGCSE and IB teacher, I would have the opportunity to inspire and challenge pupils to think beyond the traditional boundaries of education and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.” said Ms Yap Ser Van.

Join us as we continue to cultivate a vibrant, multilingual community where pupils can thrive and develop a love for learning new foreign languages!
