As we begin a new academic journey at Brighton College Vietnam, Dr. Golding, Deputy Head of Senior School, shared an inspiring reflection with our Senior pupils. Here’s a glimpse of his speech for the year ahead.
New school years are very special moments – they are a time for reflection and looking forward perhaps in a way that is as significant if not more than for a new year. There is so much to look forward to this year. I always make new resolutions for myself at the start of a new school year. What do I want to do differently? What were the successes of last year? How can I be a kinder person this year?
The first day of school is also a time to acknowledge our emotions– something I believe we all should do more to be open with others about at all times of the year. To discuss what is working for us, to be open with our teachers and others when we need help. For Y11 especially this is the year of their first public exams, and they will be working hard on their iGCSEs. As the eldest year they will be settling the expectations as others look to them to role model our school values of kindness, curiosity and confidence as these now start not to become only words but values which we live day in and day out.
These are values which we embrace not just as we enter the school but throughout our lives and you will and should take with you wherever you go. In the years to come, you will look back at how these values have influenced you and make you the person you are.
This year is about hard work, but it is also one about fun, learning, getting to know one another, better understanding each other and ourselves. It is as much about the journey as about the end point. Take time to enjoy each and every day. Your tutors, teachers and all of us are here to support you. Your success, happiness and wellbeing are our priority. So, share with your tutors and teachers how you feel about your work and friends so we can help you – there is nothing more that we as teachers are happy to do. Be open with them about how you prefer to learn, what books you would like to see in the library, what new CCAs you would like, what more you need to support you with your revision.
Let’s also take pride in welcoming new pupils to our community. Let’s be proud of Brighton College – it’s history, it’s focus on kindness and support, and it’s focus on community. Everyone can try their best – Everyone is valued – Everyone’s differences are celebrated and respected.
