To inspire the love of reading, Brighton College Vietnam presents a collection of recommended books selected by Mr John McRobbie, our new librarian. These books are engaging, age-appropriate, and designed to spark curiosity and imagination. Mr McRobbie brings a wealth of experience from the dual fields of education and librarianship, having worked in the UK, Scotland, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. He is dedicated to inspiring young minds.
Mr McRobbie is committed to transforming non-readers into avid readers by first building strong, trusting connections with pupils. “𝑶𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒖𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔,” he explained. He hopes to be a teacher librarian who is attuned to contemporary trends and popular culture, engaging pupils with age-appropriate and captivating materials.
With a PGDE as well as a PgDip in Library and Information Studies, Mr McRobbie is uniquely equipped to propel our vision of nurturing curious, lifelong learners at Brighton College Vietnam through reading. His passion for fostering a genuine love for reading in every pupil is underscored by his belief in its enduring benefits: “𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔.”
His vision for the Brighton College Vietnam library transcends the traditional concept of a hushed, serene environment, reimagining it instead as a vibrant, modern hub of activity. He plans to introduce tabletop games to draw pupils into the library, implement reading challenges and House Book Awards to inspire friendly competition and arrange meaningful author visits to make reading truly exciting.
To create a thriving reading community, Mr McRobbie aims to extend the reach beyond the classroom by organising book clubs for parents and staff. By fostering a shared passion for literature, we hope to inspire our pupils to become lifelong learners.
Join us as we embark on this exciting journey to create a library that not only houses books but ignites minds and shapes futures.
