On February 12, Brighton College Vietnam had the privilege of hosting Mr Matt Ryland, Executive Director of the British Chamber of Commerce Vietnam (BritCham Vietnam), for an insightful lecture on Vietnam’s rapid economic growth and its evolving trade relationship with the UK.
🔹 Key Insights from the Lecture:
- Vietnam’s Economic Rise: With a 7% GDP growth in 2024, Vietnam remains one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies, attracting over $27 billion in annual foreign direct investment (FDI).
- Bilateral Trade Growth: Trade between Vietnam and the UK reached $8 billion in 2024, with strong exports in electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and education services.
- Key Trade Agreements:
✔ The UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) (effective since 2021) has lowered tariffs, enabling increased investment in renewable energy, healthcare, and finance.
✔ Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) – With the UK officially joining in December 2024, businesses now benefit from expanded market access and streamlined trade regulations. - The Role of Education in Strengthening Ties:
Vietnam’s demand for high-quality education and training continues to grow, with British expertise playing a key role in shaping the future workforce. Matt has been in Southeast Asia for 10 years and prior to that was based in the UK. His professional background is in Sales, Marketing & Events, working with blue chip companies to enhance their brand and reach through innovative and creative campaigns. |
