At Brighton College Vietnam, we inspire our pupils to connect their learning with diverse cultures, fostering a global perspective in a real-world context. Recently, our Year 10 pupils enjoyed a remarkable Drama lesson with the renowned Japanese director, Tsuyoshi Sugiyama, offering them a glimpse into the global theatre landscape.
Known as one of Japan’s leading directors, Tsuyoshi Sugiyama is celebrated for his unique artistry in reimagining classic theatre through a modern lens and inventive techniques. His productions highlight experimental staging, bringing fresh perspectives to timeless stories. A prominent figure in Japan’s new wave of directors, he continues to earn acclaim both at home and on the international stage.
In the Drama session, Tsuyoshi, alongside our Drama teacher Mr. Rushton, guided pupils in a powerful exploration of Dulce et Decorum Est. Through this hands-on experience, pupils immersed themselves in the poem’s intense emotions and perspectives, learning how drama can be a bridge to empathy, imagination, and self-expression. Reflecting on the day, Tsuyoshi Sugiyama shared his thoughts on the purpose and value of drama education: “Drama in school is great. It’s not just about becoming an actor. Drama helps children understand others by putting them in different situations and emotions. It improves their communication, imagination, and helps them express themselves. It’s also important for understanding other people’s feelings and thoughts. I think drama education is really helpful for children’s development.”
