In today’s rapidly evolving world, where innovation is the driving force behind progress, the importance of nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills cannot be overstated. At Brighton College Vietnam, we seek to inspire young minds to become future innovators in our Design Technology workshop, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with top-of-the-line professional machinery, imported entirely from the UK and Europe.
Empowering creative thinkers
Creativity is an attribute that demands constant exercise. Our Design Technology pupils are empowered to explore, question, and experiment as they traverse the product design journey, from inception on paper to visualisation through cutting-edge graphic design tools such as CAD or Photoshop. Pupils also learn how to meticulously bring their visions to reality using advanced machinery such as band saws, drills, grinders, welders, laser cutters, 3D printers…
In a recent class, our Year 6 pupils infused their imagination into functional planter designs, incorporating elements from Vietnamese architectural marvels. Starting with sketches using touch screens and styluses, they learned to strategically harness the power of visualisation before advancing to the prototyping stage with the aid of 3D printers. Their goal transcended mere aesthetic appeal; they had to ensure that each design feature harmoniously contributed to the planter’s functionality by contemplating structural integrity and spatial considerations.
Bridging boundaries through interdisciplinary learning
Design technology inherently spans disciplines, drawing upon a wide spectrum of knowledge and skills. This is best exemplified in our recent DT Egg Race Challenge, where pupils wielded a diverse arsenal of tools and materials – from scroll saws, grinders and drills to decorative paper and fabric – to craft the perfect egg carrier. Balancing both aesthetic appeal and the practical application of their designs to safely transport an egg through obstacles, our pupils delved into the intersection of various disciplines, seamlessly integrating insights from Art and Physics into the design process.
Nurturing essential skills for success in an ever-changing world
Design Technology pupils not only attain mastery in technical competencies like woodworking or 3D printing but also hone vital skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
Beyond a creative mindset and technical proficiency, Design Technology instills a deep understanding of the practical implications of each and every design, emphasizing the importance of the product’s environmental and societal impact. Pupils are encouraged to engage in a cyclical process of observation, research, trial and refinement, guided by a commitment to addressing the users’ real needs, wants and values with practical and relevant solutions. Encouraged to take risks and embrace failure as part of the learning journey, they also develop resilience and perseverance – essential skills for lifelong growth and achievement.
