For Year 9 & 10 pupils, a recent field trip to Thac Ba, Yen Bai was a chance to connect more deeply with nature, with one another, and with the rhythm of a simpler way of life.
The trip began with a hands-on challenge that brought pupils together in teams to design and build rafts using natural materials. From testing buoyancy and learning to tie secure knots, to steering their creations across open water, the activity called for creativity, patience, and teamwork. The final race on the lake was filled with energy and laughter.
As the journey continued, pupils cycled along winding trails and trekked through forested hills to reach a secluded waterfall. The route was demanding, but the fresh air, quiet surroundings, and sense of accomplishment made every step worthwhile – and deepened their connections with both nature and one another.
One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was a community visit to a local sustainability project. Guided by residents, pupils explored garden spaces, learned about eco-conscious living, and took part in traditional fish-trap weaving – an experience that offered not just insight into local culture, but a quiet appreciation for skill passed down through generations.
Pupils returned with a deeper sense of connection, awareness, and the kind of learning that stays long after the journey ends.
