Pupils at Brighton College Vietnam put their creations to the test on Wednesday during the opening round of the school’s Robotics Competition. Working in teams of two or three, they designed, coded, and presented robots capable of performing a variety of tasks.
In a fun twist, each team delivered a five-minute presentation followed by a 20-second robot dance, showcasing their robot’s design, features, and functions. From minimalist builds with three wheels to elaborate “fighter” models with spinning arms, sensor system, and cameras, the range of innovation on display was impressive.
“Many of the teams prepared their robotics fantastically. I think a lot of them had great fun with it and I was really happy with the outcome. We’ve got a second day for the competition that is happening next Wednesday and we’re going to total up the points so far at that point and I think a lot is yet to be decided,” Mr. Thomas Taylor, Head of Computer Science said.
Pupils incorporated motors, sensors, and functional tools to enable their robots to move forward and backward, spin 360 degrees, and lift or rotate arms – all within a tight 20-second time limit.
“We redesigned our robot several times, especially the arm, to ensure it met the challenge requirements,” one pupil said. “We’re really happy with how it turned out.”
The competition resumes next Wednesday with three exciting challenges: a 3-metre dash, reverse parking, and an obstacle course.
