Exploring Global Ethics through TOK in the IBDP

Year 12 Theory of Knowledge pupils recently took part in an ambitious Knowledge Tribunal, tackling one of the most contested questions of the twentieth century surrounding the end of World War II.

Pupils threw themselves into the challenge with impressive dedication, researching primary sources, declassified government documents, and competing historical arguments in preparation for their roles as Prosecution, Defence, and expert Witnesses. Lead and Co-Counsels for both sides delivered carefully constructed opening and closing arguments, framing the epistemic stakes of the debate with confidence and precision. The quality of cross-examination was particularly striking, with students probing witnesses on the reliability of their evidence, the assumptions behind their claims, and the difference between what the sources proved and what they merely suggested.

A live Press team reported proceedings in real time, producing headlines throughout the tribunal and debating how the framing of a single sentence can shape what an audience believes.

The session was a testament to what our Year 12s are capable of when given a genuinely difficult question and the freedom to argue it properly.

As a core element of the IBDP, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) supports pupils in making connections across subjects, while sharpening their ability to evaluate evidence and consider different viewpoints. This reflective approach not only enriches their academic journey, but also prepares them to navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of responsibility.
