Bridging Partnerships: Austria, the EU and Vietnam | Distinguished Lecture #4

Bridging Partnerships: Austria, the EU and Vietnam | Distinguished Lecture #4

Brighton College Vietnam was honoured to welcome H.E. Philip Agathanos, Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam, for an inspiring lecture on the evolving political, educational and strategic ties between Austria, the EU, and Vietnam.

Key Highlights of the Vietnam–Austria Strategic Partnership:

  • Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure: As Vietnam accelerates digital transformation, Austria is sharing its expertise in protecting vital systems – including a cyber responders training programme linked to Austria’s partnership with the IAEA on nuclear cybersecurity.
  • Vocational Training and Higher Education: Vietnamese pupils are gaining new opportunities to study German and train in Austrian hospitals. Both countries are working to strengthen research and innovation partnerships – from start-ups to EU-funded programmes.
  • Clean Energy and Environmental Awareness: Vietnam is embracing a green future. Austria is contributing through expertise in energy transition, disaster preparedness, and early warning systems – helping Vietnam address environmental challenges with confidence.
  • Security Cooperation and Peacekeeping: Vietnam’s first participation in an EU military training mission marks a key milestone. Ongoing collaboration in maritime security and Vietnam’s hosting of the South China Sea Conference reflect shared commitments to peace.
  • Trade and Investment Growth: Trade relations are flourishing – from Austrian-made components in VinFast vehicles to iconic Doppelmayr ropeways. Austrian investment now exceeds €4 billion, driving a total trade volume of nearly €30 billion, fuelled by the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.
  • People-to-People and Cultural Exchange: Vietnam’s open spirit, strong English skills, and enthusiasm for the arts make it a natural partner for Austria. High-level participation in events like the Vienna Chamber Orchestra’s visit signals the depth of this cultural connection.

We are deeply grateful to His Excellency for sharing his insights and for inspiring our pupils to think globally, act kindly, and lead with confidence.
