IBDP: From Pollock to Neiman: A Creative Exploration of Movement

In IB Visual Arts, our Year 12 pupils recently launched their artist research and experimentation projects. Taking centre stage is An Le, who has crafted a large-scale experimental painting inspired by the legendary Jackson Pollock and the famed Olympic illustrator LeRoy Neiman, seamlessly blending abstract expressionism with dynamic figurative art. In a bold display of the creative process, a classmate volunteered to have paint splattered over her to capture a raw, figurative silhouette, perfectly channelling Pollock’s energetic and spontaneous spirit.

The resulting piece masterfully merges Pollock’s chaotic drips and splashes with Neiman’s vibrant sporting figures, bold outlines, and kinetic movement. This experimental first layer serves as a profound exploration of how different artists capture motion and energy, laying the groundwork for An Le to refine the figurative elements in Neiman’s signature, expressive style.
