Year 6 pupil invited for hot chocolate with the Head to discuss energy efficiency

Our Head of College, Mrs Carly Barber, yesterday hosted a special little guest – a Year 6 pupil – for a warm and cozy discussion held over hot chocolate, following his letter recommending ideas for improving energy efficiency within the school.
In the letter he wrote to Mrs Barber, the pupil advocated for the installation of additional motion-sensor lights at Brighton College Vietnam. Drawing on scientific explanations of climate change and the greenhouse effect, he outlined how unnecessary energy consumption contributes to global warming, carbon emissions, and damage to ecosystems. He argued that motion-sensor lighting, which activates only when movement is detected, would significantly reduce the school’s carbon footprint and support more sustainable practices.
Upon receiving the letter, Mrs Barber has invited the pupil to enjoy a hot chocolate and have a conversation about the topic. She praised our pupil for the eloquence and strong research in his thoughtful and well-articulated writing. With a background in science, she said she was particularly impressed by the pupil’s understanding of the environmental impact of excessive electricity use and greenhouse gas emissions. During the meeting, Mrs Barber agreed to explore further adjustments to improve energy efficiency and encouraged the pupil to continue sharing thoughtful ideas that could lead to positive change.
At Brighton College Vietnam, we strive to equip our pupils with the capabilities needed for lifelong success, anchoring our efforts in our core values of curiosity, confidence, and kindness. Our goal is to cultivate critical thinkers and creative problem-solvers who respect diverse perspectives and are inspired to give back to the world they are a part of.
